About

Hallo und Herzlich Willkommen auf meinem Blog!

Hello and Welcome to my Blog!

The idea of this website came on a Sunday afternoon when the entire family gathered for some coffee and cake to celebrate Oma’s (Oma = grandma in German) and my birthday, which coincidentally is on the same day. I had the task of baking six delicious birthday cakes (Torten) and one of them had to be Stachelbeertorte (Gooseberry Cake), Oma’s favorite. Oma loved cooking and especially, baking, so her cakes were always appreciated and asked for at any family reunion. After receiving her approval, the guests suggested that I should definitely take notes on all the recipes Oma’s ever done in order to pass them down to the next generation.

Oma’s recipes are the classical ones you’d expect to find at a family table, simple and delicious. In time I added my own recipes which became part of our recipe database.

I believe a “secret” recipe has no real value in being kept secret. On the contrary, I learned a lot of new things from people all around the world who shared their family recipes and techniques and I am happy to have added some of their delicious dishes to my family recipe list. That’s why I also want to give back to the community. For the recipes who were inspired by other people, you will also find a link and a description of the person, dish, and if I altered the original recipe. For me, it’s very important to give credit and I believe exchanging recipes helps develop new ones.

This blog is meant to be a database of the recipes my family enjoys. You will find traditional German recipes which were passed down in my family, modern ones and also famous ones from different cultures. Over time, even though I gathered experience and learned different techniques, I am NOT a professional chef/baker. I will show you how we do it in our family, my style of cooking/baking and different tips and tricks I picked up along the way.

I try to use as much as possible healthy ingredients, natural cream, butter (no margarine) and, if possible, to avoid baking powder/soda if there’s an alternative.

Have fun cooking and baking!

Viel Spaß beim Kochen und Backen!
